Jefferson County could face about $2.45 million in additional costs as federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program changes, County Administrator Ryan Piche said. The added cost is expected to reach nearly $5.75 million by 2028 if the changes remain in place.
The federal share of SNAP costs is set to decrease from 50% to 25% toward the end of the year. New York is among the states where local governments help administer and pay for the program. North Country leaders are seeking state assistance and asking the federal government to delay the changes. The Jefferson County budget is due Oct. 27.
